Common Air Conditioning Problems
Broken Fan Motor – The fan motor is what runs the fan in the condenser unit. It is also one of the components that face the most issues. The motor can get dirty, or electrical issues can cause it to fail or break. Sometimes, it’s not the motor itself, but the capacitor that’s causing the fan motor to have problems.
Broken Fan Blades – The fan blades on the condenser unit can get damaged because debris such as sticks gets stuck. Damaged blades can’t move air as they should. One of our Colton AC repair technicians can identify the problem and quickly make the repairs.
Leaking Refrigerant – The refrigerant is the liquid in your air conditioner that absorbs warm air. If there’s a leak, your unit won’t have enough refrigerant. As a result, it cannot correctly absorb air, so your unit won’t be producing enough cool air. Low refrigerant can also lead to frozen coils.
Frozen Coils – With frozen coils, your air conditioner can’t correctly cool air. They can also lead to severe problems like compressor failure if the issue goes unaddressed for too long.
Water Leaks – A little water from condensation isn’t usually a problem. There are some issues. However, that can result in more significant leaks. Frozen coils that thaw can cause the drain pan to overflow. Clogs in the condensate drain can also cause overflowing. Sometimes leaks can occur because the condensate drain is cracked or the condensate pump is broken.
Circuit Breaker – The circuit breaker helps to prevent electric surges that might otherwise damage your electronics, including your air conditioner. If the circuit breaker is faulty, it can’t work correctly, which can damage your air conditioner. Faulty circuit breakers can also cause an electrical fire, so the issue should be addressed as soon as possible.
Thermostat Problems – A problem with the thermostat can result in a problem with your air conditioner. Sometimes the thermostat only needs to be cleaned. Other times, however, there is a bigger issue. If you have an older thermostat, it may be time to replace it.
Neglecting Annual Maintenance – Ignoring to schedule annual maintenance appointments can let small issues go undetected, only to have them worsen and cause your air conditioner to quit when you need it most.
Frequent Cycling – The furnace typically cycles as necessary to keep your home at your desired temperature. If it cycles too frequently, however, it can indicate a problem with the thermostat or that the filter is dirty.
No Heat – The job of your furnace is to heat your home. If it isn’t heating properly, or at all, there may be issues with the thermostat, a dirty filter, and problems with the pilot light or electric ignition.
Unusual Sounds – Any sounds such as banging, clanging, rattling, buzzing, or other noises that aren’t typically heard when your furnace starts up and runs can point to a mechanical issue.
Blower Runs Constantly – The blower should only run when your furnace runs. If your furnace shuts off, but the blower continues to run, there could be a problem. It might also be that your thermostat is on the wrong setting.
Dirty Air Filter – A dirty air filter prevents proper airflow. When the furnace can’t draw in the air as it should, it begins to work harder. Parts may start to wear out faster than expected. Your air filter should be changed at least every three months.
