Your Honeywell thermostat has a critical job. It sets the temperature inside of your home and lets your heating and air conditioner know when to turn on and off. When it’s not functioning properly, you could be faced with severe heating and cooling issues that not only affect the comfort of your home but your wallet as well. If your Honeywell thermostat isn’t working, here are a few tips to troubleshoot the issue.
Test the Settings on Your Analog Honeywell Thermostat
If you have an analog Honeywell thermostat and it isn’t functioning correctly, test the settings. Most analog thermostats have one switch for indicating heat, cool, and off and a second switch for turning the fan on auto or off. Turn the thermostat to heat and turn the temperature up to see if it turns on. If it does, your heater is working. Next, switch the thermostat to cool and turn the fan on auto. Turn the temperature down and wait. If your air conditioner turns on, it’s working correctly.
Check the Inside of the Thermostat
If your heat and air conditioning don’t turn on, there may be an issue on the inside of the thermostat. The next step you will want to turn the electrical breaker off that controls the unit first. Then carefully remove the cover, after turning the thermostat off, and check the wiring inside. It would help if you also looked everything over to make sure that it’s clean. If everything looks good, there could be an issue with your HVAC system, or it may simply be time to replace your thermostat.
There’s No Display on Your Digital Honeywell Thermostat
One of the most common issues with digital thermostats is that there is no display. This means you have a blank screen. There are a few different issues that can cause this to happen. One reason is that the batteries are dead. Replacing them can often solve the problem.
There may be no display because an access door on your HVAC system isn’t completely closed. Some types of units have a switch that activates the system when the door is closed all the way. If you don’t close the door all the way, the system won’t activate, which cuts the power to your thermostat. Check to make sure all access doors are closed.
Another common issue for not having a display on your Honeywell thermostat is because the circuit breaker may have been tripped. HVAC systems typically have their own circuit breaker, so check the box to make sure the switch is on.
The Display is Active
It may be possible to have an active display, but your thermostat still isn’t working. If your home feels too hot or too cold for the temperature displayed on the screen, there could be a broken or malfunctioning temperature sensor. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature where the thermostat is located. If they don’t match up, there’s a good chance that it’s that sensor. The sensor can be replaced, or you may need to replace the whole thermostat.
Other issues that can occur, even with an active display, include incorrect day and time settings, loose wires, and incorrect jumper settings. Power outages can throw off the clock and day of the week settings, which can then result in improper operation. Check these settings. You should also make sure that your jumpers are set to the correct settings for your HVAC system.
Both analog and digital Honeywell thermostats are very dependable, but issues can still arise. In many cases, you can troubleshoot the problem and fix it. If nothing seems to be doing the trick, though, it is best to consult with an expert.
